Grammar: Cleft Sentences

It-clefts, Wh-clefts e outras formas de destacar exatamente o que importa.

Estrutura: It + be + [foco] + that/who + resto. Destaca UM elemento.

Base: "John broke the window." → "It was John who broke the window." (destaca QUEM)

"It was the window that John broke." (destaca O QUÊ) / "It was yesterday that he called." (QUANDO)

📐 Regra: use "who" para pessoas, "that" para coisas/tempo/lugar.

Estrutura: What + oração + be + [foco]. "What I need is a holiday."

"What happened was a complete disaster." / "What I love about him is his honesty."

O verbo "be" fica no singular: "What I need is more time." (não "are").

"The reason why I left is the long hours." / "The thing that bothers me is the noise."

"All I want is a quiet life." (= a única coisa) / "All you need to do is ask."

Contraste: "It is not what you say but how you say it." / "It was not the price but the attitude."
