Grammar: Articles — A, An, The & Zero

As três regras fundamentais dos artigos em inglês.

A + consonant sound: a dog, a car, a university (note: "university" starts with 'yu' sound — NOT a vowel sound!)

AN + vowel sound: an apple, an hour (silent 'h'!), an MBA, an honest person.

USE when: (1) introducing something new: "I bought a new phone." (2) talking about jobs/roles: "She is a nurse." (3) meaning "one": "Can I have a coffee please?"

⚠️ DO NOT USE with: uncountable nouns (❌ "a water" ✅ "water" / "some water"), plural nouns (❌ "a books" ✅ "books" / "some books").

Already mentioned: "I have a cat. The cat is black."

Unique items: the sun, the moon, the internet, the president.

Superlatives: the best, the most beautiful.

Both parties know: "Can you close the door?"

Rivers, oceans, mountain ranges: the Amazon, the Pacific, the Alps.

Countries with Republic/States/Kingdom: the USA, the UK, the Czech Republic.

⚠️ DO NOT USE with: most countries/cities/continents, proper names (❌ "the Brazil" ✅ "Brazil"), meals, sports, school subjects, abstract nouns.

Plural generics: "Cats are independent." / "Dogs are loyal."

Uncountable generics: "Water is essential." / "Music makes people happy."

Abstract nouns: Love, music, happiness, freedom, success.

Most countries/cities: France, Tokyo, Brazil, Spain.

Transport: by car, by train, on foot.

Meals: for breakfast, after lunch.

Sports and games: play football, play chess.

Languages and school subjects: learn English, study science.

💡 Tip: Native speakers sometimes break these rules in casual speech — focus on the most common patterns first!
