Grammar: Modal Verbs — Meaning & Nuance

Os três sistemas fundamentais dos verbos modais avançados.

MUST = strong personal/moral obligation: "I must call my mother more often."

HAVE TO = external obligation (rule/law/requirement): "I have to submit my tax return by April."

SHOULD/OUGHT TO = advice / expectation: "You should eat more vegetables."

DON'T HAVE TO = no obligation (it's optional): "You don't have to wear a tie."

⚠️ Critical difference: DON'T HAVE TO (optional) ≠ MUSTN'T (prohibited): "You mustn't smoke here." Confusing them is a very common mistake!

MUST BE (near certainty): "She must be tired — she worked all night." (I'm almost certain)

SHOULD BE (expectation): "The package should arrive tomorrow." (I expect it will)

MIGHT/MAY/COULD BE (possibility): "It might rain." / "He could be stuck." (maybe, not sure)

CAN'T BE (negative near certainty): "That can't be right — I checked the figures twice."

📊 Scale: must > should > might/may/could > can't (from most to least certain)

Should have + PP = regret/criticism: "You should have told me!" / "I shouldn't have eaten so much."

Could have + PP = missed possibility: "You could have won — you were so close!"

Must have + PP = past deduction: "She must have left early — her desk is empty."

Might have + PP = past possibility: "He might have missed the announcement."

Would have + PP = hypothetical past (3rd conditional): "I would have helped if you had asked."
