Grammar: Wish & Regrets

Wish + past para desejos presentes, wish + past perfect para arrependimentos, e wish + would para reclamações.

To wish a PRESENT situation were different, use wish + PAST SIMPLE:

"I wish I had more time." (but I don't) / "I wish I knew the answer." (but I don't) / "She wishes she lived by the sea." (but she doesn't)

With 'be', use WERE for all subjects (subjunctive): "I wish I were rich." / "I wish he were here." (Casual speech often uses 'was', but 'were' is correct.)

📐 Regra: This expresses dissatisfaction with the present or an impossible/unlikely desire.

To express REGRET about the PAST, use wish + PAST PERFECT (had + past participle):

"I wish I had studied harder." (but I didn't — regret) / "I wish I hadn't said that." (but I did — regret) / "She wishes she had taken the job." (but she didn't)

"If only" works the same way and is more emphatic: "If only I had known!" / "If only I hadn't been so stubborn!"

📐 Regra: This is essentially the feeling behind the THIRD conditional — deep regret about unchangeable past events.

To complain about someone's behaviour or wish they would change, use wish + WOULD:

"I wish you would stop interrupting me." / "I wish it would stop raining." / "I wish my neighbour would turn down the music."

We use this for things OTHER people (or situations) do that annoy us — NOT for ourselves.

❌ "I wish I would be taller." → ✅ "I wish I were taller." (use wish + past for yourself)

📐 Regra: Use wish + would mainly to express irritation or a desire for change in others/circumstances.
