Grammar: Question Tags

Question tags "mirror" the main sentence: POSITIVE statement → NEGATIVE tag / NEGATIVE statement → POSITIVE tag.

"You're happy, aren't you?" (positive → negative) / "You aren't happy, are you?" (negative → positive)

The tag uses the SAME auxiliary verb: "You CAN swim, CAN'T you?" / "She HAS left, HASN'T she?"

If there's no auxiliary (present/past simple), use DO/DOES/DID: "You like it, DON'T you?" / "He went, DIDN'T he?"

📐 Regra: O sujeito na tag é sempre um PRONOME: "Maria is here, isn't she?" (não "isn't Maria?").

I AM → aren't I?: "I'm right, aren't I?" (never "amn't I")

LET'S → shall we?: "Let's go, shall we?"

IMPERATIVES → will you? / won't you?: "Close the door, will you?" / "Help me, won't you?"

NEGATIVE WORDS (never, nobody, nothing, hardly) count as negative → positive tag: "You never call, do you?" / "Nobody came, did they?" (use 'they' for nobody/everybody/someone)

THERE IS/ARE → keeps 'there': "There's a problem, isn't there?"

RISING intonation (↗) = a REAL question (you're not sure): "You locked the door, didn't you?↗" (genuinely asking)

FALLING intonation (↘) = seeking AGREEMENT/confirmation (you're fairly sure): "Lovely weather, isn't it?↘" (just making conversation, expecting agreement)

📐 Regra: This is huge in spoken English! The same words can be a genuine question or just friendly small talk depending entirely on your intonation. Most question tags in casual conversation use falling intonation — they're not real questions, just social glue.
