Quando usar gerúndio, quando usar infinitivo, e verbos que mudam de significado.

(a) As subject of sentence: "Swimming is great exercise." / "Learning English takes time."

(b) After prepositions (always!): "interested IN doing" / "good AT speaking" / "before leaving" / "after finishing" / "without saying goodbye."

(c) After these verbs: enjoy / avoid / consider / finish / keep / mind / miss / practise / admit / deny / suggest / imagine / risk.

Memory trick: verbs about FEELINGS and FACTS tend to take gerunds — they describe something real that happened or a general attitude.

(a) Expressing purpose: "I study English TO get a better job."

(b) After adjectives: "It's easy TO learn / difficult TO master / important TO practise."

(c) After these verbs: want / decide / hope / plan / need / promise / agree / refuse / manage / fail / learn / choose / offer / expect / seem / appear / pretend.

Memory trick: verbs about INTENTIONS and DECISIONS tend to take infinitives — they point towards the future.

STOP: stop smoking (quit permanently) / stop to smoke (pause to have a cigarette)

REMEMBER: remember meeting (recall past event) / remember to meet (don't forget future task)

FORGET: forget meeting (I don't recall meeting him) / forget to meet (I forgot I was supposed to meet him)

TRY: try doing (experiment, see what happens) / try to do (make an effort to achieve something)

REGRET: regret doing (feel sorry about a past action) / regret to inform (formal: sorry to say)

These are worth memorising — they come up constantly in B2 exams and real conversation!
